The University of Salford invites prospective students to pursue advanced studies in materials and physics through our MPhil and PhD research programs. Our distinguished Physics and Materials Research Group spans experimental, computational, and theoretical domains across physics, chemistry, engineering, and mathematics. Key research areas include applied optics, complexity and nonlinear photonics, hydrogen storage, solar energy technologies, graphene functionalization, semiconductor materials, and thin film applications. Our research degrees provide the freedom to develop your own project under the guidance of experienced academic supervisors, with options including Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Internationally, a postgraduate research qualification serves as a fundamental requirement for academic careers. Many of our PhD graduates now occupy postdoctoral research positions in higher education institutions worldwide. Our physics and materials alumni have successfully pursued varied career paths across global industries, including defense (BAE Systems, QinetiQ), energy (Petroleum Geoservices, ATMOS International), and advanced materials sectors (NXP Semiconductors, Hardide, Vacuum Equipment Ltd.). Additional career pathways include scientific instrumentation development (Kratos Analytical, Waters) and medical imaging technology (Agilent Technologies).
