Pursue our BA in English Literature and Film & Theatre to examine the artistic interplay between written works and live performances across literature, stage productions, and cinematic works. You'll benefit from the joint expertise of two distinguished departments (English Literature, and Film, Theatre & Television) that maintain strong collaborative ties. Both departments have established pioneering reputations in their disciplines. Our English Literature program was among the UK's first to incorporate North American writers like Margaret Atwood into academic study, maintaining this innovative approach through a curriculum featuring exceptional contemporary English-language literature worldwide. The Film, Theatre & Television department initiated film studies in British higher education and remains at the forefront through our diverse module offerings.

Your studies will cover cinema's evolution from its late 19th-century origins to modern times, with opportunities to explore everything from mainstream Hollywood to experimental films, alongside emerging digital media and video installations. Through theater courses, you'll analyze works by influential playwrights including Caryl Churchill, Sarah Kane, and Samuel Beckett while examining various modern theatrical expressions, from commercial productions to cutting-edge performance art.
