The PhD program in Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, and their Applications is offered through the Midlands Energy Consortium in partnership with the University of Birmingham's Centre for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Research.
Research focus
This doctoral training center brings together 50 faculty members from diverse fields, primarily chemical engineering, along with chemistry, physics, mathematics, materials science, social sciences, and urban development.
These experts collaborate across five key research areas:
polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells
solid oxide fuel cells
compact fuel cell systems
hydrogen generation and storage technologies
electrolytic processes
Research projects span topics like catalytic materials, nanoscale particles, separation membranes, fluid dynamics, hydrogen storage solutions, and consumer adoption studies. Industry collaborations have led to applied research in aviation fuel cells (EADS), sustainable refrigerated transport (Unilever), and on-site hydrogen production systems (ITM Power).
