The field of applied linguistics provides an engaging platform to explore how language interacts with real-world contexts. Our faculty members are experts in psycholinguistics, language acquisition, developmental linguistics, and motivational approaches to language learning.
Our research encompasses discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, with focused expertise in healthcare communication, workplace interactions, and the study of language in relation to gender and sexuality. We stand out by providing research opportunities in literary linguistics, narrative theory, and cognitive approaches to literature. A PhD program primarily involves self-directed research, with regular supervisory meetings scheduled annually. While no coursework credits are required, full-time candidates must participate in the Arts Faculty's Researcher Skills training initiative.
