The Mixed Reality Laboratory (MRL) at the University of Nottingham serves as a specialized studio space where experts from diverse fields—including computer science, psychology, sociology, engineering, architecture, and art—work together to investigate how ubiquitous, mobile, and mixed reality technologies can transform daily experiences.
Founded in 1999 with £1.2 million in JREI funding, the MRL upgraded its facilities in 2005 through an additional £1 million SRIF 2 grant. Today, the lab hosts more than fifty academics, researchers, and doctoral candidates engaged in extensive studies on mixed reality applications. From 2000 to 2007, the MRL led EPSRC's Equator IRC, a £10 million collaborative project involving eight institutions to examine the fusion of physical and digital interactions in everyday contexts. In recent years, the MRL has played a pivotal role in launching the Horizon Digital Economy Institute and the Horizon Centre for Doctoral Training, supported by £19 million in UK Research Council funding, with the goal of creating globally recognized hubs for innovation and knowledge exchange in the pervasive digital economy.
