The connection between art, politics, and identity forms a central focus for much of the department's research. Studies examine how visual elements both represent and influence identity, spanning personal, collective, and societal levels. Key historical periods investigated range from the French Revolution and modern era emergence to UK nation-building, European fascism's growth, American Civil Rights struggles, and Cold War/Vietnam War dynamics. This research may analyze artistic works engaging with political spheres or diverse visual expressions mirroring political environments. Equally significant is exploring how image interpretations transform amid political shifts, cultural borrowing, or strategic reuse.
