International Political Economy, also known as Global Political Economy, represents a dynamic and expanding academic discipline. This field traditionally explores the interplay between political systems and economic forces, bridging national and international perspectives within our globalized world. In recent years, it has emerged as a particularly fruitful area for critical social science investigations into urgent worldwide challenges including poverty, social disparities, gender dynamics, financial instability, and ecological concerns. Manchester's MA program in International Political Economy aligns with our Politics department's research expertise, offering core modules that expose students to both mainstream and alternative theoretical frameworks while analyzing contemporary globalization trends. The program additionally provides elective courses covering specialized topics such as: international governance structures, development disparities, gender studies, ecological policy, global labor markets, financial systems (including financialization processes), variations in capitalist models, belief systems (notably neoliberalism), economic downturns, and movements of social protest and transformation.
