The Department of Materials offers a comprehensive range of research and education in materials science, spanning from conceptual design and creation to performance optimization, preservation strategies, and commercial applications. Our interdisciplinary research initiatives address critical, society-focused material challenges, enabling us to serve both industrial and societal demands.

We structure our investigations around eight primary research areas, though many projects involve collaboration with experts across different departments, institutions, and industrial partners.

Ongoing textile and apparel research focuses on pioneering innovative fabric materials, manufacturing techniques, and end products for diverse uses - including medical implants, aerospace composite materials, safety equipment, athletic wear, intelligent clothing systems, as well as 3D body imaging and digital solutions for fashion e-commerce.
