Our PhD/MPhil program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery allows you to pursue a research initiative aimed at advancing knowledge in this surgical specialty. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery research team conducts health services studies that provide optimal evidence for enhancing surgical procedures, with particular focus on postoperative pain management and dental implantology, among other fields. Clinical pain research derived from systematic reviews has examined both intraoperative local anesthesia techniques and postoperative pain relief approaches. Such investigations play a vital role in establishing evidence-based improvements to clinical protocols and enhancing patient comfort following surgical procedures. Under the leadership of Professor Paul Coulthard, the group has produced an extensive collection of Cochrane Systematic Reviews on Oral Implants, offering a trustworthy synthesis of worldwide scientific evidence for clinical best practices and serving as a basis for ongoing implant research. These reviews undergo continuous refinement and updating.
