At The University of Manchester, our Gastroenterology research encompasses fundamental gut physiology, disease mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic interventions. Our investigations range from cellular and molecular analyses, animal disease models, and human physiology to clinical trials and healthcare system studies. Current research focuses on areas such as: neurogastroenterology and the gut-brain connection, inflammatory bowel conditions, liver disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and related functional issues, clinical nutrition and intestinal dysfunction, gastrointestinal surgical procedures, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal malignancies, immune responses in the gut lining, gut microbiome research, digestive hormones, and the regulation of hunger and fullness in both healthy and diseased states.
