The University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics faculties. With a distinguished history of academic and research excellence, we engage with nearly all modern research fields. Our department plays a key role in several interdisciplinary research centers across Manchester, including the National Graphene Institute, Photon Science Institute, Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, and Dalton Nuclear Institute. We also oversee the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire.
Our Fluids and Soft Matter research group investigates complex material behaviors and instabilities, ranging from bubble dynamics to biological tissues, covering both fundamental research and practical applications. Current research focuses on interfacial phenomena in porous media analogs, microfluidic systems, surface wetting processes, material deformation under stress, particle settling dynamics, structural buckling in engineered materials, and biological fluid mechanics including respiratory and circulatory systems.
