Our PhD program in East Asian Studies empowers you to conduct groundbreaking research on topics related to the East Asian region, broadly encompassing areas like Southeast Asia, particularly those influenced by Chinese writing systems. You'll pursue this research while either transcending cultural borders or leveraging the expertise of East Asian Studies scholars to explore regional academic themes. Our faculty includes specialists across Chinese and Japanese Studies, supported by language instructors in both languages. We provide postgraduate supervision in diverse fields including religion, education, popular culture, arts, history, gender studies, identity development, literature, social dynamics, professional networks, as well as medical history and policy - whether focused on specific East Asian cultures or examining cross-border themes within the broader regional context.

Qualification Requirements

We require successful completion of a master's course with an overall classification of Merit or higher, or its overseas equivalent, with an element of research training. A research proposal must be included with the formal application materials. Students whose first language is not English require one of the following: an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with 7.0 in the writing component, or a TOEFL score of 600 paper-based test or 100 internet-based test, or a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 70 overall with 70 in the writing component, or an overall Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) III grade of Merit with Merit in the writing component.
