The China Studies PhD program represents a key academic partnership between Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and the University of Liverpool. Graduates will receive a degree awarded by the University of Liverpool, which holds official recognition from China's Ministry of Education.
This program cultivates humanities and social science scholars specializing in China research. The Department of China Studies encourages applicants from diverse academic disciplines. Candidates can pursue doctoral research across multiple domains such as historical studies, literary analysis, sociological inquiry, anthropological investigation, geographical examination, political science, and international affairs.
Participants are officially enrolled as off-campus research students at the University of Liverpool while conducting their studies at XJTLU. Each PhD candidate receives guidance from both a primary XJTLU-based supervisor and a secondary supervisor from the University of Liverpool.
The full-time doctoral journey generally consists of three years of research followed by one year dedicated to thesis composition, complemented by specialized training programs. Full-time candidates must complete their thesis within four years (extended to six years for part-time students).
