The PGCE Secondary School Direct (Mathematics) program equips you with both hands-on experience and theoretical foundations to excel as a Mathematics educator. Unlike traditional teacher training routes, this pathway offers extended school placements prior to the PGCE commencement and follows an adapted curriculum. You'll specialize in teaching either 11-16, 11-18, or 14-19 age groups to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), mastering the National Curriculum and examination frameworks for GCSE, AS, and A2 levels. The program emphasizes practical teaching skills through substantial classroom experience, including placements in Primary schools and multiple Secondary institutions. Over 25 weeks of the course are dedicated to immersive school placements across various educational settings. This experiential learning is complemented by exploring contemporary educational theories, concepts, and emerging trends. Partnering with schools across Greater Manchester, the School Direct pathway enables participating institutions to handpick trainees, with the potential for future employment within their network (though not guaranteed). While maintaining the PGCE framework, School Direct features an adjusted schedule with enhanced engagement in your designated training school.
