The University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics departments. With a distinguished history of academic and research excellence, we engage in nearly all modern research fields. Our department plays a key role in several interdisciplinary research centers across Manchester, including the National Graphene Institute, Photon Science Institute, Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, Dalton Nuclear Institute, and Mesoscience and Nanotechnology Centre. We also oversee the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Our Biophysics research team employs experimental, theoretical, and computational methods to investigate biological and biomedical systems across molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ scales. Frequently, we integrate these methodologies to achieve deeper, more comprehensive insights into fundamental physics and biomedical principles. All available research projects are interdisciplinary in nature. Consequently, while we welcome postgraduate applicants from physics and chemistry backgrounds, we also regularly accept students from biosciences, computer science, mathematics, and engineering disciplines.
