The University of Manchester's Physics and Astronomy Department ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics departments. With a distinguished history of academic excellence and groundbreaking research, we engage with nearly all modern research fields. Our department plays a key role in several interdisciplinary research centers across Manchester, including the National Graphene Institute, Photon Science Institute, Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, Dalton Nuclear Institute, and Mesoscience and Nanotechnology Centre. We also oversee the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Our Fluids and Soft Matter research group investigates complex material behaviors and instabilities, ranging from bubble dynamics to biological tissues, exploring both fundamental science and practical industrial applications. Current research focuses on interfacial phenomena in porous media analogs, surface wetting processes, deformation in complex materials, structural buckling in metamaterials, and biomimetic investigations of blood flow properties.
