Mechatronics, which combines mechanical engineering with advanced electronics, plays a crucial role in fields like industrial automation and robotics. For a mechatronic system to manipulate an object, it needs to locate the object, move it, and position it accurately. This requires electronic components to process data from sensors that monitor position, orientation, and visual or auditory cues. The system must then translate these electrical signals into commands for actuators to execute the desired actions. Mastery of feedback control is essential to ensure smooth transitions between stable states without unwanted vibrations or erratic behavior. This course equips you with the skills to design and build such sophisticated mechatronic systems. During your final year, you'll collaborate on a team project, either commissioned by industry partners or based on real-world industrial challenges. Previous student projects have ranged from designing a sensor-equipped training wheelchair for Paralympic athletes to building the foundational framework for a robotic orchestra and developing secure smart grid solutions for urban energy management.
