The Film Studies Joint Honours program offers comprehensive training in film theory and history while allowing you to explore specialized interests alongside Chinese language and cultural studies. Through structured courses and film screenings, you'll engage with both classic and modern cinema from diverse global traditions. The curriculum examines both mainstream and alternative films to deepen your knowledge of cinematic history and contemporary discussions influencing the art form's evolution. As you refine your analytical abilities, you'll explore cinema's relationship with social, cultural, and political issues, situating films within their historical frameworks while considering current discourse and future directions for the medium. This program focuses on academic study rather than hands-on production. Chinese Language studies continue throughout the degree, building proficiency in speaking, writing, comprehension, and translation across various contexts. You'll also select from China-focused electives spanning literature, cinema, cultural studies, politics, history, linguistics, economics, development studies, and business, benefiting from the Faculty of Humanities' extensive Chinese Studies research expertise.
