Virology focuses on examining viruses that cause illnesses in humans and animals. This field explores virulence mechanisms, viral spread patterns, and how immune systems respond to viral infections. At the University of Liverpool, the Institute of Infection and Global Health unites top researchers from medical, veterinary, and fundamental science disciplines within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The institute maintains strong partnerships with NHS professionals through the Liverpool Health Partners Academic Health Science System.
Virology research takes place in modern facilities within the Ronald Ross and ic2 Buildings on the university's main city campus. Our work investigates various aspects of viral diseases, including pathogen behavior, detection methods, spread patterns, and immune reactions to viruses like flaviviruses (Japanese encephalitis, Zika), Ebola, Chikungunya, HIV, respiratory syncytial virus, cytomegalovirus, and herpesviruses. Research methods include diagnostic testing, flow cytometry, ELISA, epidemiological studies, transcriptomic/genomic analysis, proteomics, and infection modeling.
The research objectives center on understanding how pathogens spread and behave during infections, with the goal of developing improved treatments and vaccines to enhance human health outcomes.
