Applied and Molecular Microbiology focuses on utilizing molecular techniques to investigate microorganisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) that influence medicine, agriculture, veterinary science, and various industries. The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences was created to unite top researchers from medical, veterinary, and fundamental science disciplines within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Studies in Applied and Molecular Microbiology are conducted in modern laboratories across four locations: the Biosciences Building, Ronald Ross Building, IC2 (all in Liverpool), and the Leahurst campus. This research involves analyzing, developing, and applying microorganisms and their byproducts to benefit medical, agricultural, veterinary, and industrial fields. Examples include modifying microbial communities, employing microbes to suppress harmful pathogens, or using microbial symbionts to manage insect or other pest populations. The primary goal is to harness microbes to better combat pathogens and pests, safeguarding food supplies while ultimately enhancing human and animal health and well-being.
