Liverpool's eye and vision research spans fundamental molecular studies to practical healthcare applications, aiming to improve patient outcomes. Our diverse team of clinical and non-clinical researchers collaborates to investigate disease mechanisms, prevention strategies, early diagnosis, and therapies for ocular conditions. The Department of Eye and Vision Science works in tandem with St Paul's Eye Unit at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, establishing itself as a leading UK hub for vision-related medical research with global recognition.
The Institute of Ageing & Chronic Disease serves as a central platform for examining the biological and social factors affecting lifelong health and ageing. Our multidisciplinary research encompasses molecular studies, clinical trials, and population health, with more than 100 researchers exploring patient care, lifestyle factors, biological mechanisms, and disease patterns.
Our vision science breakthroughs are yielding tangible results, from innovative ocular drug delivery methods to retinal scanning techniques for detecting cerebral malaria in African children. These impactful outcomes have secured substantial funding from prestigious partners such as Wellcome Trust, UK Research Councils, NIH (USA), Unilever, and GSK.
Equipped with advanced research facilities and robust collaborations with national and international institutions, we're strategically positioned to advance our goals in ageing and chronic disease research.
