Marine Science explores every facet of marine ecosystems, examining how ocean currents circulate globally, the chemical interactions of trace elements and contaminants, and the biological spectrum from microscopic phytoplankton to large marine mammals. Our interdisciplinary research initiative seeks to deepen knowledge about the ocean's mechanisms and its pivotal role in Earth's systems. Liverpool has maintained a longstanding relationship with marine research, dating back to Jeremiah Horrocks' tidal studies in 1640 at age 22, and William Hutchinson's three-decade-long sea level observations. It's fitting that Britain's inaugural Oceanography department launched here in 1919. This tradition continues today, with our Ocean Science department marking its 100th anniversary and the campus hosting the prestigious National Oceanography Centre.
Our faculty members are globally respected experts spanning physics, chemistry, and biology disciplines. We provide research opportunities that frequently transcend traditional boundaries, addressing crucial questions about present and future ocean dynamics. Detailed information about specific research areas can be found on our Postgraduate Research portal.
Joining our research team means becoming part of collaborative groups that nurture independent scientific inquiry while cultivating versatile professional skills applicable to any career path. We foster a dynamic, stimulating research atmosphere designed to support PhD candidates in achieving academic excellence during their studies and throughout their subsequent careers. Active dissemination and publication of research findings to broader audiences is strongly encouraged.
