Modern Languages research at Liverpool stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, featuring globally-oriented projects that break down traditional academic barriers. Our doctoral supervision brings together experts from multiple language fields and diverse methodologies, providing exceptional support for innovative research. A Modern Languages PhD enables students to leverage our Department's strengths across eight language areas and numerous interdisciplinary connections. Our faculty includes specialists in literature, history, visual culture, gender studies, sociolinguistics, and translation studies, all supporting language-focused scholarship. Through initiatives like Translating Cultures and Transnationalizing Modern Languages, we've led the way in applying postcolonial perspectives to both theory and teaching practices.
Our department's expertise is further enriched through partnerships with other academic units, including English and Communications & Media, while keeping multilingual and multicultural insights central to interpreting today's world. Students can also engage with non-academic partners worldwide, supported by our faculty's extensive international research network spanning five continents.
