We invite applications from future scholars looking to pursue a PhD program under the guidance of specialists in our International Studies Department. Our vibrant academic community offers cutting-edge research possibilities to all candidates.

This collaborative program, hosted at Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University, represents a strategic partnership between XJTLU and the University of Liverpool. Students benefit from joint supervision by distinguished academics from both institutions. Graduates receive a University of Liverpool degree, fully accredited by China's Ministry of Education.

Full-time PhD candidates may request a research stay at the University of Liverpool for up to six months, typically in their second year, to collaborate with their Liverpool supervisor. Approved applicants will have their travel and accommodation expenses covered by both institutions for this overseas study experience.

Our doctoral students thrive in a nurturing research atmosphere. The XJTLU Graduate School and School of Humanities and Social Sciences cultivate this environment through academic events, conferences, and hands-on opportunities as research or teaching assistants, complemented by training from the University of Liverpool's Doctoral College.

A full-time PhD program generally consists of three research years plus one thesis-writing year, enhanced by professional development. Full-time candidates must complete their thesis within four years, while part-time students have six years. XJTLU allocates up to 16,500 RMB per student for conference participation throughout their studies, aiming to enrich academic growth and promote research sharing.

The International Relations PhD provides supervision across diverse topics, encompassing international relations, regional studies, history, global communications, and political science.
