Our faculty members actively participate in national and regional film research networks. Liverpool organizes a recurring screen studies seminar series, featuring approximately five guest speakers per term. Within Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC), our research focuses on global perspectives in language-based scholarship, encompassing Hispanic, Lusophone, and Francophone communities beyond Europe, migration and transnational cultures within Europe, multilingual studies, sociolinguistics, international cinema, the cultural legacies of European colonialism, global Black Studies, and the translation and cultural exchange processes inherent in these interactions.
We also maintain strong research expertise in historical studies and memory, particularly examining portrayals of war and conflict across various global settings. Multiple faculty members are pioneering digital approaches to research, utilizing emerging technologies to present findings spanning from medieval to contemporary periods.
Liverpool boasts a vibrant film community with collaborative opportunities through local arts institutions like Tate Liverpool and the city's independent cinemas.
