This MRes program offers a specialized pathway into advanced research, helping you cultivate the skills needed to become a self-directed scholar and complete an original academic project with support from classics and ancient history specialists.

The course delivers rigorous preparation for PhD studies and professional advancement. We'll walk you through each research phase while building versatile competencies like analytical reasoning, organizational skills, effective communication, and solution-oriented thinking.

Your research methods training will be customized for classical studies and adapted to your particular investigation. You'll collaborate to create a personalized reading list and specialized assessments leading to a comprehensive research output.
You'll learn to formulate research questions, locate pertinent sources and evidence, design and execute your study, then interpret and share your results. The curriculum also connects you with contemporary scholarly discussions in historiography and theory.
You'll work alongside distinguished researchers from the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology. Our MRes supervisors conduct cutting-edge research spanning early human history through late antiquity, with expertise covering the Ancient Near East, Greco-Roman societies, and ancient technologies.
