The Institute of Irish Studies serves as a premier interdisciplinary hub renowned worldwide for its academic focus on Ireland. Our expertise spans diverse fields including medieval to contemporary Irish history, literary studies, political science, conflict resolution, transitional justice, migration patterns, cultural geography, and gender research. As a globally recognized leader in Irish Studies scholarship, our institute—founded in 1988—remains Britain's sole dedicated center of its kind, committed to being the UK's principal venue for multifaceted research on Ireland and its global connections.
In 2007, the Irish government acknowledged our international prestige through a substantial endowment establishing a professorship in Irish Studies, enabling us to broaden our educational and research horizons.
Our PhD candidates explore innovative research avenues across Irish Studies' diverse domains, encompassing literary analysis, historical inquiry, political examination, conflict transformation, and migration studies. Our chronological coverage extends from medieval periods to contemporary times, supported by an exceptional Irish library collection featuring rare volumes, political archives, and specialized journals. Students benefit from outstanding opportunities for interdisciplinary supervision on cross-cutting themes.
