This program offers comprehensive training in geophysics and geology fundamentals, blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on applications. Students explore key subjects in geophysics, geology, physics, and mathematics, with a focus on practical fieldwork, exploration geophysics (especially seismology), planetary-scale geophysics, and inverse theory. Fieldwork locations currently include Ireland, Wales, the Isle of Man, and Spain.
This four-year course provides in-depth education in geophysics and geology, featuring extensive fieldwork alongside essential physics and mathematics training. No prior geology background is required, making this degree a gateway to diverse geoscience opportunities. Graduates gain versatile career prospects, enabling flexible transitions between geology and geophysics roles in major organizations.
During the third year, students complete an independent field mapping project and dissertation, either domestically or internationally. The final year involves joining one of our geophysical research teams to conduct a significant research project, potentially yielding publishable results—ideal for those considering advanced research degrees.
Several programs in the School incorporate lab and fieldwork in varied settings, from urban to coastal and mountainous regions. We welcome applications from disabled students on equal terms, with accommodations available to ensure accessibility.
