Evolutionary Anthropology provides anthropology's long-term perspective in its most comprehensive form. This field examines humans as intricate beings capable of language, cognition, and cultural development through both biological and social lenses. As the sole program of its type in the UK, this distinctive interdisciplinary course allows students to engage in a thorough exploration of human nature.
The curriculum centers on three core aspects of evolutionary anthropology: human evolution archaeology, palaeoanthropology, and primatology. Students may opt to cover all three components or concentrate on two while supplementing with modules from life sciences and earth sciences.
The program mandates four weeks of fieldwork, including a two-week departmental field school after the first year. During the second year, numerous students participate in international research excavations led by faculty, with current sites located in Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, Greece, Egypt, and the UK.
