Renowned as one of the world's most dynamic musical hubs and a past Capital of Culture, Liverpool stands unparalleled for music education. Our institution maintains deep ties with the city, collaborating extensively with cultural organizations like the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. This unique relationship enriches our programs, with orchestra members regularly visiting campus to conduct lessons, masterclasses, and workshops. The BA Music program offers comprehensive historical and critical engagement with classical music traditions, cultures, and performance practices. The curriculum balances practical elements like performance, composition, orchestration, and music technology with theoretical studies in music history and analysis. Students can also explore specialized areas including music psychology, film/game scoring, and career-focused options.
Program structure adapts to individual module selections. First-year core courses build essential theoretical foundations for composition and performance, while music history surveys significant developments and historiographical approaches. Students encounter diverse musical genres, from film scores and jazz to world music traditions. Our flexible approach provides extensive module choices across all musical disciplines.
During second and final years, students specialize in focused areas, either concentrating exclusively on classical music or incorporating technology/popular music electives. Advanced historical, theoretical, performance, and composition options accompany specialized topics. The culminating year emphasizes specialization through major independent projects - whether dissertations, composition portfolios, or extended recitals.
