This program is perfect for those dedicated to pursuing music exclusively. It enables you to specialize in your musical passions while gaining comprehensive training in music theory, analysis, composition, performance, history, culture, ethnomusicology, studio production, and the music business—including a potential work placement. Our BMus in Music provides the deepest level of study, allowing you to immerse yourself entirely in music. The first year includes core and elective modules to establish a strong foundation for advanced studies in subsequent years. In your third year, you can undertake the major Recital project (similar to dissertations in other fields), an option exclusive to this program and only available as a minor project in our BA degrees.Alongside academic coursework, you’ll have the chance to participate in school-led ensembles spanning diverse musical styles, such as the Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphony Orchestra, Gamelan Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Lanyi (West African Ensemble), Symphony Chorus, and the Pop Collective.This four-year course includes a year abroad in your third year, where you’ll explore different musical perspectives at a partner university. You’ll return to Cardiff for your final year to complete your studies.Career opportunitiesA music degree equips graduates with versatile skills applicable to various professions, both within and outside the music industry. Alumni have secured roles with the BBC, Arts Councils, Glyndebourne Opera, English National Opera, universities, Oxford University Press, the National Trust, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among other educational, commercial, and nonprofit organizations.Our curriculum integrates employability skills, blending music-specific expertise with transferable academic abilities. Second-year modules on the Business of Music introduce different career paths in the industry and include a short placement in music or arts-related fields.The annual Careers in Music lecture series connects students with professionals in performance, education, journalism, arts management, production, licensing, and media composition.PlacementsThe Business of Music III modules in year two offer a short placement opportunity, either as a block or through regular workplace visits.
A level: AAB-BBB. Must include Music.
International Baccalaureate: 34-31 overall or 665 in 3 HL subjects. 
Baccalaureate Wales: From September 2023, there will be a new qualification called the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (level 3). This qualification will replace the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate). The qualification will continue to be accepted in lieu of one A-Level (at the grades listed above), excluding any specified subjects.
GCSE - Grade C or grade 4 in GCSE English Language. IELTS (academic) - At least 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill. TOEFL iBT - At least 90 overall with a minimum of 17 for writing, 17 for listening, 18 for reading, and 20 for speaking.
