The Italian language holds exceptional cultural significance. UNESCO reports that more than 60% of the world's artistic treasures reside in Italy, while globally, centuries of Italian migration have shaped culinary traditions, arts, sports, fashion, tourism, and heritage sectors in countless local businesses. Italian culture has a worldwide presence, reflecting humanity's enduring love for art, beauty, and historical legacy. At Liverpool, our Italian program offers a unique methodology to achieve fluency while gaining deep insights into its cultural heritage—equipping students to engage meaningfully with Italian language and traditions both within Italy and in their own communities.
Through studying history, sociolinguistics, cinema, and literature from an Italian perspective, students acquire vital linguistic and intercultural competencies to navigate today's interconnected world.
Aligned with faculty research specializations, our curriculum covers Italian language (including translation and interpretation), linguistics, cultural history, film studies, modern literature, pop culture, and post-colonial studies. Beyond the classroom, we host film screenings, social gatherings, and an annual public lecture—the Lucrezia Zaina Bequest Lecture—showcasing influential global figures connected to Italian culture.
Liverpool's Italian department primarily comprises native-speaking tutors and language assistants. We actively cultivate academic and professional ties with Italy to support students during their Year Abroad experience.
