This program offers students the chance to enhance their counseling knowledge and abilities, particularly ideal for those pursuing a career as professional counselors. Counseling serves as a form of talk therapy with two key aspects: supporting individuals through emotional and relational challenges, and fostering personal development. During the initial term, grounded in the reflective scientist-practitioner framework, students explore counseling theories, ethical principles, and begin practicing essential counseling techniques. As the course leads to a professional counseling qualification, much of the learning involves hands-on experiences where students refine their counseling skills and learn to integrate theory into practice. The curriculum primarily focuses on the person-centered approach, highlighting the significance of intersubjectivity and the therapeutic alliance. In the second term, students gain real-world experience as counseling trainees, study clinical research methodologies, and learn techniques for evaluating client progress, including standardized assessment tools. The second year centers on the MSc component, where students build research competencies and undertake a counseling-related research project. After completing the PG Diploma in Counseling (first year), graduates may apply for individual registration with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), contingent upon fulfilling required practice hours.
