Microbiology plays a vital role in many areas of daily life, from food safety to disease treatment, sustainable technology development, and studying microbial influences on climate. This program prepares students to tackle pressing worldwide issues like antibiotic resistance, water purification, and sustainable food production through research in medical, industrial, and environmental microbiology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, protein studies, structural biology, fermentation processes, and bioengineering. Monthly supervisory meetings ensure regular progress reviews. Within three months, students must submit a draft research proposal for assessment. Typically starting with an MPhil, students can upgrade to a PhD after one year by submitting a written report and passing an oral defense. Both degrees require a high-quality thesis and successful viva voce examination, where candidates must show how their work advances scientific knowledge or enhances current theories.
