This 12-month program involves no formal coursework, focusing instead on independent research culminating in a thesis. Like a PhD, you'll work with a supervisor specializing in your chosen field. The MSc by Research enhances both academic and practical abilities, serving as an ideal alternative if you want to delve deeper into your subject without committing to a PhD at this stage. Graduates frequently progress to doctoral studies or industry roles.
The effectiveness of antimicrobial medications in combating infectious diseases is increasingly compromised by the swift emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in harmful microorganisms. AMR has become one of the most severe global health challenges, projected to claim 300 million lives by 2050 - surpassing cancer mortality rates. Our investigations aim to uncover the molecular processes behind microbial drug resistance and develop novel approaches to combat infections from multidrug-resistant pathogens. Leveraging the School's comprehensive knowledge in molecular and structural biology, we examine AMR mechanisms in bacteria and viruses, from identifying genetic factors to analyzing the biochemical and structural aspects of resistance.
