The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology offers facilities and a collaborative atmosphere for over 30 engaged research teams, creating a unified scientific network with recognized expertise in four key areas of both fundamental and applied research. Our department includes an enthusiastic teaching faculty, featuring dedicated teaching specialists who play vital roles in undergraduate and graduate programs, especially within the School of Biological Sciences. We also nurture a thriving population of doctoral candidates pursuing PhDs through original research. Beyond faculty and PhD students, we foster an inventive and encouraging workplace for post-doctoral researchers and support staff. Doctoral candidates undertake self-directed research projects with supervision, typically spanning 3-3.5 years full-time or 6-6.5 years part-time. An additional year (or remaining portion) may be used for thesis preparation. The dissertation, limited to 50,000 words, must present novel findings and research worthy of publication. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination.
