The Department of Genetics and Genome Biology is globally recognized for its groundbreaking research in core genetic principles. Our expertise spans genome diversity, evolutionary dynamics, and applying genetic approaches to pressing challenges like human health, forensic science, agricultural improvement, and antibiotic resistance. We take pride in our interdisciplinary methodology that highlights genetics as a universal framework for studying organisms ranging from viruses and microbes to plants, insects, and humans. PhD candidates undertake self-directed research projects with faculty supervision, typically spanning 3-3.5 years (full-time) or 6-6.5 years (part-time). An additional year (or remaining portion) may be allocated for thesis preparation. The dissertation, limited to 50,000 words, must demonstrate novel insights and research worthy of publication. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination.
