PhD candidates undertake independent research projects with support from a supervisory team. The maximum enrollment period before thesis submission is 4 years full-time or 7 years part-time/distance learning. Typically, active research (including experiments, fieldwork, and data collection) spans 3-3.5 years full-time or 6-6.5 years part-time/distance learning. After completing active research, students may apply for a 12-month writing-up period. The combined active research and writing-up duration cannot exceed the maximum registration period. Theses should generally not surpass 80,000 words and must offer original contributions to knowledge with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in a viva voce oral examination.
