Delve into diverse subjects with comprehensive depth, spanning from medieval art and architecture to contemporary Hollywood film studies. Doctoral candidates undertake an autonomous research initiative mentored by an advisory panel. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time/distance learners. Intensive research (encompassing experiments, lab work, field studies, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a 12-month writing-up period. Theses should generally not surpass 80,000 words and must demonstrate original scholarly contributions with publication-worthy content. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the dissertation in an oral examination.

You must hold a UK undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree with at least First-Class or Upper Second-Class honours or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution. We would also normally expect applicants to hold a Master's degree but this may not always be necessary.
