At Leicester, we inspire students to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated faculty and eager learners. Our university boasts numerous English-focused societies and committees offering a diverse range of extracurricular and social activities. Each year, we organize numerous academic gatherings including conferences, lectures, and seminars, most of which welcome public attendance. Doctoral candidates undertake self-directed research projects with support from a supervisory panel. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time or 7 years for part-time study. The active research phase (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to one year. The combined research and writing phases must not surpass the total registration limit. Theses should generally not exceed 80,000 words and must demonstrate original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination (viva voce).
