The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology conducts diverse research spanning physicochemical mechanisms to cellular and developmental biology. Doctoral candidates undertake an autonomous research project supervised by a team, typically within 3-3.5 years (full-time) or 6-6.5 years (part-time). An additional year (full-time) or seventh year (part-time) may be utilized for thesis preparation. The dissertation, limited to 50,000 words, must present novel findings and publishable work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense during an oral examination.

Qualification Requirements

Students must hold a UK undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree with at least First-Class or Upper Second-Class honours or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution. Students will normally be expected to hold a Master's degree in a relevant subject (at Merit or above) or be able to demonstrate equivalent research experience and academic writing skills. IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) - Academic Version minimum overall score 6.5 with minimum component score 5.5, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Internet-based test minimum overall score 90 with minimum component score 20.
