Our BA Modern Languages program enables you to learn two or three languages, choosing from French, Italian, and Spanish. This adaptable course lets you customize your studies based on your preferences. You'll enhance your language abilities while exploring the social, political, and cultural influences that have shaped modern France, the Francophone regions, Italy, and Spanish-speaking countries. The University of Leicester ranks among the Guardian University Guide 2022's top 20 for Modern Languages and consistently achieves high marks for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey. As a special feature, after your first year, you'll participate in one of our fully-funded Summer Schools to experience the language and culture of your chosen study area firsthand. Beginners' language students will visit the country of their introductory language, while advanced students may select between their two focus countries. You can start one of your selected languages from scratch, broadening both your linguistic capabilities and cultural understanding. Our intensive beginner courses rapidly develop your skills to post-GCSE proficiency within a year. All language instruction, whether for beginners or advanced learners, emphasizes modern written and spoken communication. You'll refine your writing through exercises in various styles and registers, while small-group speaking sessions, primarily led by native speakers, will strengthen your oral fluency.
