Our BA in English with Creative Writing allows you to explore English literature across different eras while developing your creative writing abilities. Leicester boasts a vibrant literary heritage, with our university library housing the personal collections of renowned local writers Joe Orton and Sue Townsend. Alongside learning from our faculty, you'll gain insights from visiting speakers - our Centre for New Writing organizes an annual lecture series featuring past guests like Ben Okri, Laura Esquivel, and Michael Morpurgo. This program covers diverse creative writing genres, spanning fiction, creative nonfiction (including memoirs and travel writing), poetry, and screenwriting. You'll have opportunities to present your work publicly and craft literary critiques, acquiring practical skills to prepare you for post-graduation careers. The curriculum also provides insight into various writing-related professions such as film, publishing, editing, performance, and literary festivals. As you study works by Wilde or Dickens, you'll simultaneously create your own narratives; while examining life-writing, you might analyze autobiographies by Nabokov, Wright, or Maya Angelou. This engaging program connects you with literary traditions as both an analytical reader and creative contributor.
