Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous investigator in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering research on specific biological challenges while joining a vibrant academic community employing cross-disciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your doctoral studies, you'll not only deepen your specialized knowledge but also enhance professional capabilities through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
Leeds researchers particularly focus on decoding cellular signaling mechanisms—the fundamental communication systems governing normal cell operations—and their dysfunction in pathological conditions, particularly malignancies. Since molecular architecture dictates biological activity, structural biology serves as a cornerstone for modern scientific breakthroughs. Our investigations target the three-dimensional configurations of biomolecules including proteins, DNA/RNA, sugars, and fats, along with their assembled complexes. This field extends to analyzing molecular dynamics and integrates concepts from molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, computational modeling, and simulation techniques.
