Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous researcher in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering investigations into specific biological challenges while joining a vibrant research network employing interdisciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your PhD journey, you'll not only deepen your subject-specific expertise but also enhance your professional capabilities through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
The Faculty's plant science research at Leeds explores core biological processes in plants while confronting the worldwide imperative of ensuring food security through sustainable farming practices. Investigations are concentrated within the Centre for Plant Sciences, which brings together 14 faculty members from the Schools of Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Research projects span diverse areas, from examining cellular functions and genetic regulation in model organisms (Arabidopsis, Physcomitrella) to analyzing plant-microbe ecological relationships and root-soil dynamics, as well as devising innovative approaches to mitigate environmental stresses and pest damage in various agricultural crops.
