Guided by your primary supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering research on significant biological challenges while joining an extensive network of researchers employing interdisciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific issues. During your PhD journey, you'll not only deepen your specialized knowledge but also enhance your professional capabilities through structured training programs and participation in seminars and conferences.
The growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogenic microorganisms is compromising our capacity to prevent, treat, and cure infectious diseases. AMR has emerged as a critical global health crisis, projected to claim 300 million lives worldwide and potentially surpass cancer mortality rates by 2050. Our investigations focus on unraveling the molecular processes behind microbial drug resistance and developing novel strategies to combat infections from multidrug-resistant pathogens. Leveraging the School's extensive knowledge in molecular and structural biology, we examine AMR mechanisms in bacteria and viruses - from identifying genetic factors to analyzing the biochemical and structural characteristics of resistance pathways.
