Pursuing a postgraduate research degree demands commitment and enthusiasm for your chosen field. The journey is demanding but immensely fulfilling. As a doctoral candidate, you'll undertake specialized research under the guidance of a principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors.
Our research focuses on the critical connections between civil infrastructure, public health, and environmental systems. We investigate contaminants and microbes across air, waste, soil, and water systems, with particular attention to how energy use, sustainability, health outcomes, and environmental effects intersect. Through both laboratory experiments and computer modeling, we trace pollution sources and exposure pathways while examining how infrastructure design and operation affect risk levels. Our work explores both technological innovations and their interactions with human, economic, social, and political dimensions. Many projects bridge disciplines, combining engineering with socioeconomic considerations. We seek to deepen knowledge of environmental challenges facing both the UK and developing nations, drawing on extensive fieldwork experience in urban and rural settings across developed and developing regions, with a strong tradition of local and global partnerships.
