Aging leads to nervous system decline, impairing cognitive functions like learning and memory while altering personality traits. For some, genetic factors trigger these changes prematurely, resulting in significant behavioral differences from societal norms. Progressive neurodegeneration causes worsening mental and physical health, with devastating and ultimately fatal consequences. Currently, no effective treatments exist. At Leeds, we're investigating the molecular mechanisms behind disease progression, examining how specific genes and their variations contribute. Our primary objective is discovering how targeted drugs might safeguard neurons from degeneration and enhance patients' cognitive abilities.
