Applying membranes and membrane proteins in biofuel cells and detection systems. Cellular membranes and their internal structures are fundamental to biological processes, influencing everything from nutrient absorption and environmental sensing to cellular communication. Representing over 20% of human genes, membrane proteins are implicated in various diseases and are targeted by most modern medications. The Integrative Membrane Biology team investigates these proteins' architecture and roles in health and medicine. Our collaborative, interdisciplinary approach enables examination of membrane systems at multiple scales, from molecular to organismal. These studies advance core biological knowledge while contributing to drug discovery, biosensor innovation, agricultural productivity, and microbial energy solutions.
