The MA by Research (MAR) program in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science enables students to conduct independent research at the Master's level, often serving as an ideal foundation for pursuing a PhD. The Centre for Religion and Public Life (CRPL) examines the intricate and vital influence of religious beliefs and practices in modern society, spanning local, national, and global contexts. This interdisciplinary hub unites faculty and graduate researchers from the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, along with other departments at the University of Leeds, under the leadership of Director Professor Johanna Stiebert. CRPL scholars utilize diverse methodological approaches—including sociology and anthropology of religion, theology, and biblical, religious, and cultural studies—to emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives in studying religion's role in public life. The Centre's research explores contemporary religious intersections with pressing issues like gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, migration and globalization, media, and social development. Their work spans geographical regions from Leeds and the UK to Europe, Africa, and Asia, with expertise covering multiple faith traditions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and new religious movements.
